Aluminium contributes to lighter nacelles
One of the biggest challenges with tomorrow’s multi-megawatt turbines is keeping the weight down to a minimum. The use of aluminium contributes to achieving this goal. The specific weight of aluminium is only one-third of that of steel, and a well-designed aluminium component often has a weight saving of 50-60% compared to steel.
With the right product design, utilizing the easy formability of aluminium often means that the overall cost of the parts can also be reduced – especially since aluminium does not require surface treatment to protect it from corrosion.
